Red Velvet Cake, or not!
Ever since I’ve heard about, and tried the Red Velvet Cake I have been interested in trying to make them.
I’ve made them in the past, however, they have all just turned out OK. I was talking to a friend and he me that he had a Red Velvet Cake recipe that was amazing. I asked for the recipe and he was able to deliver.
As soon as I heard about the cake I’ve wanted to try and make it. I got the recipe a couple weeks ago and was pretty sure we had almost everything. We added the final ingredients to the grocery list. I was going to make it for Mother’s Day.
Making the Cake
Mother’s Day morning, I made sure to get everything ready. I had to pull the butter out to soften up.
That afternoon I made the cake, followed the recipe and went through each step exactly. However, I pulled out the food coloring and opened the box. To my surprise, there was no red food coloring. Apparently, we used it all in the last cake.
I was thinking to myself, how are you going to have a Red Velvet Cake with no red food coloring. Well the only thing I could do, was to try a different color. We did a blue velvet cake, and it doesn’t look too bad.
It looks a little darker on top than I was expecting. It also fell in the middle. According to my internet research that could be either not enough moisture, which is hard to believe as it was a runny batter. The other option is, I pulled it out too early. I’m not sure if this is the case, however, the cake is really moist and delicious.
Making the Icing
The traditional Red Velvet Cake icing is a white Cream Cheese Frosting. I decided that since I was changing the colors on the cake I would change the color on the icing. Out of the options, I had left, I decided to go with Yellow. I thought it would go well with the blue, and it’s my wife’s favorite color.
Overall it was a good first attempt. I’ve never made a cake, not from a box. It turned out better than expected, it was moist and tasty.
What do you think the reason the cake fell in the middle was? I want to try and fix that cause it was a flat cake. I want a good dome on it next time.
